Behind the Scenes: A Day in the Life of an Airbnb Superhost

A peak into my life as a full time business owner and mom! I want to include my kids in this because they were the driving force that I wanted to create a flexible schedule for myself, and running my own business was appealing. Each day I am able to drop them off and pick them up from school, soccer practices on Monday nights, dentist and doctors appointments, and everything in between. Not many jobs allow you to work in time blocks or take your baby to work - I came from a healthcare background where this would never be possible. My guests and owners have given me this ability by trusting me to provide an excellent rental experience. So here is a look into my “normal” day!

6 am: Kids all wake me up and I start my morning checking my phone and responding to messages and emails. I set boundaries with my guests that I am available from 7 am to 10 pm, then by phone call only (not message) for emergencies like lockouts or a flood. This is new for me. Learning to set boundaries, and making sure I get a good night’s sleep is a non-negotiable.

7 - 8:30 am: This is family time, but mostly it’s getting everyone ready and out the door for school time. My two oldest go to a Montessori program and my baby gets ready to work with mom. He is my best employee, so I make sure to pack his bottles and toys for a full day!

9am-2pm: This is my daytime work block where I’m usually doing onsite work. This includes house checks, shopping for inventory, working on projects, photography shoots, yard clean up. Every day is honestly so different and it’s what keeps the job interesting and keeps me on my toes. For example: a few weeks ago I spent this whole time helping my cleaner clean a home, including scrubbing walls. But then the following week I could be in a meeting with Cheyanne going over blogs, social media, and homes for the entire morning and then spend the afternoon at Home Goods buying new pillows. The most important part is staying organized and staying on task! I check in on my task list and property calendars multiple times a day. No matter what the task list looks like, onsite work ends at 4 pm when our guests check in so it better all be done!

3 pm-8pm: This is my family time block of the day. It’s here I try my absolute best to set boundaries again incase emergencies arise, but for the most part I try to keep this time dedicated to my kids and husband. Do I answer messages from guests? Yes. Do I show homes to real estate clients? of course. But unless it has to be done during this time I do it during my day or night work blocks.

8 pm - 10 pm: My night time work block begins and is usually when I’m doing computer work. I respond to emails, book keeping, billing, update rental listings, look at my schedule for the upcoming day/week if anything has changed and plan. Night time usually becomes the time when I’m thinking about ways to increase bookings, optimize pricing, and just overall build and grow my business. This can be a tedious but necessary part of the day. I usually have a movie on or listen to an audiobook to keep it interesting.

What about this schedule makes me a super host versus any other rental host? I think it’s that I am intentional about my day and how I host. When I started in 2021 I was doing the same thing, working on hosting 9am-1pm and then working my W2 job from 1pm-11pm. I did this every day for 2 years, I hustled hard and always gave dedicated time to my guests and owners. Can you host and spend 3 hours a week hosting, absolutely. Will your rental be able to stay up with the competitive market, can you increase amenities, create an online presence? Probably not. I want the best for my guests, my owners, and my family - superhost and super mom!

This blog was meant to be about being a Superhost on AirBnb and part of that is making sure I am kind and hospitable towards my guests. Taking breaks and not being “on” all day is important to reducing burnout when you are a business owner. It’s easy to work all the time but after working all day for weeks on end it’s also easy to snap at a guest who asks for a roll of paper towel. Do yourself and your guests a favor and make time for other things in your life.
